心血管疾病是目前全球人口死亡的主要原因，中国约43%的死亡归因于心血管疾病。动脉粥样硬化是导致心血管疾病的主要病因之一。血液中过高的胆固醇水平（尤其是低密度脂蛋白胆固醇（LDL-C）水平）可显著加速动脉粥样硬化的发展。控制血液中LDL-C水平是预防和治疗心血管疾病的首要策略。
